Time To Reinvent The Film Biz

I think you know I think we need to reboot the entire film ecosystem.  We know it doesn’t work the way it could.  We’ve been talking about for awhile, but we can do more.  How do we step it up?

If you read my post this morning, I hinted at something new to come.  Well…

Fortunately I was approached by The ReInventors recently and we have decided to team up. The ReInventors have been looking at how we can approach different problems and tackle them.  They do this via an interactive web discussion done it the form of a show.  They have tackled artificial intelligence, health care, education, and other high level topics.  And now they want to focus on Hollywood.

I have agreed to host ReInvent Hollywood, a six part series looking at the form, the audience, the artist, the business, the support organizations, and the rules of the game.  Every other Tuesday at 11A PT I will be joined by five or six other experts in the field to consider where we are now and how we might build it better.  The great thing is that you can easily join in as we do it via Google Hangouts.

THIS should give you a bit of the flavor:

If we could redesign the film culture and business into the best possible system for artists, the industry, and society at large, what would it look like?

I’d love your suggestions for guests for each of the episodes.  I have some good ideas.  Some of the first episode are booked.  But I know you will have  a lot of great suggestions. They don’t have to be industry people. Folks from other fields are really welcome.

Can I recommend myself? I run Indie Sponsor, the only online directory for artists looking for small business sponsorship. Large corporations have been sponsors for a few decades, but small businesses (28 million in the U.S. alone) are overlooked. I funded a TV pilot and a play with small business sponsorship. They are much more open to the indie artist and easier to connect with. [4]

I love Lance Weiler who is always on the cutting edge of where new tools & technology meets media & entertainment. Ingrid Kopp who is the Director of Digital Initiatives at Tribeca Film Institute is fabulous & knowledgeable in these areas too.

As lawyers and screenwriters say, start as close to the end as possible:

An Ellison, Larry, Megan or David.

Jack Dorsey, (since you’re already up there).

Saeed Amidi, founder PLUG AND PLAY (accelerators) or alternate.

Somebody from the Menlo Park tech venture investment groups.

David Lynch on the importance of staying true to your art.
Scott Myers (the Black List) on the importance of the script above all else (Scott is a great moderator among other writers in discussion, perhaps unproduced screenwriters.).
Aaron Sorkin on writing for the market while keeping your original voice (perhaps as counterpoint to Lynch).
Tarantino on how to break into the business (just make your movie).
Stephanie Palmer on how to sell a script when you get invited into the room.
Stacy Parks on how indie filmmakers can leverage the existing conventional market.
Diablo Cody on herself as a case study in breaking into Hollywood through blogging.
Damon and/or Affleck on Project Greenlight – giving people a shot at making a Hollywood backed movie.

It’s probably already a topic you’re planning, but it would be awesome to have a discussion about the state of changing the mindset of up and coming filmmakers to start understanding the new models. Especially in outside markets. I see so much potential for films in outside LA/NY markets because budgets can be so low and creative control can be so high, but as I sit in Pittsburgh, essentially prostrating myself in front of these talented people and say “let me help produce your film,” and spell out how… They think I’m crazy. Their plan is to just get into Sundance and think that will make them rich and famous.

I’m going to sound so bitter when I say this, but I think a part of the problem is traditional film school. Maybe this is just My local film schools, but I thing these schools are pushing the old market, maintaining the old Status Quo and these students don’t even understand how different models can work. I recite case studies to them like a Bible Thumper and yet, they want nothing to do with me. Now of course, they are still working their films and moving forward in their own way, and it remains to be seen if they will be successful or not–nobody wants them to be successful more than me. But nobody is teaching them about this New Distribution model. They all know what VOD but they don’t have any idea how it works.

It is getting so frustrating looking at googly eyes and so frustrating having to hear no after no, that I’m begging for a way to get these tertiary markets on board. Am I the only one seeing this?
